Finger-Licking Crispy Duck at Bebek Bengil.

Here’s again another post for my previous trip in November 2012, which has been quite some time ago, but I decided to write about it anyway since I had a good, great lunch there. You will also stumble to more of my posts about the restaurants and cafes in Bali. As I am going to Bali again this end of April, I am keeping up with posting more places in Bali from my previous trips. Please note that prices for food and beverage of the restaurant listed below might have changed.

If you’ve been to Bali, of course you should have heard before about the infamous Balinese Crispy Duck, the one they called Bebek Bengil or Dirty Duck Diner. It is a restaurant that serves Crispy Duck as their signature. Oh, I do really love duck.

On the first day of my trip, I went to Ubud, thus I made my time useful and went directly to this restaurant. I actually was a bit confused initially, in choosing to dine in this restaurant or Bebek Tepi Sawah (another similar restaurant). We chose Bebek Bengil anyway. The place was quite easy to find. It has a clear signboard. The exterior is pretty balinese too.

We went straight in, and were welcomed by the waitress that shown us where to sit. We could just to sit in the “pondokan” (hut). In our way to our hut, we could see the green environment with trees and flowers. It’s a nice yard, with many huts for patrons to sit. Perfect for family. I could see why expats love this place too.

Our hut, was not the cleanest hut we’d ever seen. It’s not as lovely actually. A bit dusty, old. But that’s the essence, perhaps. (I have to be a glass half-full type of person, right?) That honestly didn’t bother me, as I was too excited to try the famous crispy duck.

I think the front dining area was cleaner though. It looked nicer.:)

Of course if you are selling duck as your signature dish, it’s only right if you present this kind of duck napkin holder on the table, yes? 😛

# Bebek Bengil – The Original Crispy Duck since 1990 (IDR 87 k)

It didn’t take long for our order to be served. The signature dish came with 3 kinds of chilies, and 1 portion of Balinese vegetables. Oh, the crispy duck was huge! It’s half a whole duck. The duck is said to be steamed/marinated with Indonesian spices and deep fried to crisp perfection. And yes, the duck was really crispy on the outside, we could even hear the cracking sound of the delicious layer. The inside was on the other hand, juicily tender. I could taste the hint of perfectly-infused spices, which made the duck somehow “sophisticated”. With the complement of sambal matah (the other two didn’t disappoint either!), the crispy duck was mind-blowing. I couldn’t find flaw in it. Recommended.

Note: Use hand to eat for a finger-licking good experience. 😀

# Black Russian Pie (IDR 53 k)

Oh the pie, the mouth-watering dessert. I could remember every detail of the complex taste! The Black Russian Pie is actually made with the domination of vodka, kahlua and chocolate. With the three main ingredients, Dirty Duck Diner made a unique delicacy with exotic taste. I could taste the sweetness of the chocolate, the bitter-end of the vodka, the dark flavour of the kahlua. I really recommend you to try this one whenever you have a chance to visit Dirty Duck Diner. This is also the signature dessert of Dirty Duck Diner, and it certainly did live up to my expectation.

With two of the dishes served, I could only sum up that Dirty Duck Dinner aka Bebek Bengil is really one of the best restaurants to visit in Bali. The duck was smoking ‘hot” (in a manner of speaking) and even the dessert rocked my taste bud. I will definitely be back again this April.

I heard Dirty Duck Diner has a branch too in Jakarta, but I’m not sure about the taste. Is it going to be similar to the one in Bali? I kinda doubt it (perhaps due to the different local spices and ingredients), that’s why I never really make an effort to visit the one in Jakarta. But maybe I will someday, if I have the time. 🙂
