During my last visit, which is in December 2015, I visited Casa Luna, Ubud and had the chance to meet one of very important figures, Janet De Neefe who is the lady who started Ubud Writers & Readers Festival.
If you happened to visit Ubud quite often, you must be familiar with some really well-known restaurants, one of which is Casa Luna. Janet De Neefe is the owner of THAT particular restaurant. Besides Casa Luna, she also owns Indus, one of those restaurants with amazing views in Ubud. I did visit Indus as well, but more about Indus in another post.
It was 4.37 when I dropped by Casa Luna, and Janet was sitting there, not alone, but with her beautiful daughter, Dewi. After the first shake-hand, I was pretty sure that my afternoon would be very nice. Even at first sight, Janet and Dewi effortlessly came across as very nice people with heart-warming smile. Talking with them was very easy. They were very knowledgeable, and during our one hour time, there were, somehow ,a lot to talk about.
From the conversation, I could really get the genuine sense of Janet’s deep love for Bali. Well, after all, she has been in Bali for like almost 30 years! Her enormous passion in introducing Balinese cuisine to the world brought her here and she eventually stayed for the love of her life, her husband. Now she’s a perfectly happy mom with 4 children and proudly called Bali as her home.
Since it was a perfect afternoon tea, we did enjoy some cakes and drinks. Casa Luna was having an afternoon tea promotion, consisting of a slice of cake and a cup of tea/coffee of your choice. We came at the right time.
Just in case you don’t know, Casa Luna opened its door in 1992 and ever since, it has served tons of happy patrons. I’m happy to be one of the happy patrons. 🙂
# Chocolate Almond Cake
One of the richest chocolate cakes I’d ever tasted. This slice of heaven (for me, since I’m such a chocolate addict) was one of the best things we had for the day! The rich chocolate was real, not too sweet, and it was nicely matched with fragrant almonds. Pure indulgence.
# Lemongrass Tea
I always have a thing with the fragrant smell of lemongrass, and blending lemongrass in a hot tea is just right! That’s why I always order lemongrass tea in Bali. Not that we don’t have lemongrass tea in Jakarta, but somehow, cafes or restaurants in Jakarta seem to fail in making this simple tea.
# Lime Tart
Another heavenly slice. But unlike the chocolate almond cake, this felt like the total opposite in terms of character. The highlight of this tart was the tangy citrus sensation from the creamy lime layer. It awoke my sense of taste and left an unusual luscious character in my mouth.
# Iced Coffee
This is the ice coffee that many people praised (even on tripadvisor)! And apparently, I agree! The ice coffee was amazing, mostly because of the good quality of the coffee. The creamy texture and bittersweetness were really spot on. It’s strong but addictive.
It’s truly a perfect afternoon tea time with luscious cakes and drinks by Casa Luna. After an hour short of experience, I really found Casa Luna charming. Its casual and laid-back ambiance, combined with its warm hospitality serve as a main soul of the restaurant. Not to mention its comprehensive menu and delicious cakes. Oh, I did spot a family that dined in Casa Luna that afternoon, and it was somehow a heart-warming sight seeing the family there.
