Kyo Sushi. A humble Japanese restaurant in Kelapa Gading.

Good news, now a good sushi joint, Kyo Sushi, with reasonable price is officially open!

If you are staying in Kelapa Gading, you might have already known Kyo Sushi in Mall Artha Gading. It’s located in the food court, but is seemingly underrated all this time. Good thing was that they decided to open this brand in a shop house at Boulevard Raya, specifically on the second floor of Nuansa Dekor. Now, whenever I crave for Japanese comfort food, I can definitely walk a short mile there.

Let me tell you a few honest points about Kyo Sushi so you can possibly know what to expect from this little Japanese joint.

1. Price range for food: IDR 10 k – IDR 50 k
2. They offer quite a wide selection of sushi rolls, and donburi
3. The available tables are not too many since the dining space is a bit small
4. Outdoor seating is available, with only two available tables. A good option for smokers (even though, I strictly do not support people to smoke!)
5. if you expect to find delicious premium sushi with premium rice and premium ingredients, you might as well go somewhere else
6. if you’re looking for a simple Japanese feast, head here
7. The sushi rolls here are mostly only an okay in my humble opinion, with a few good rolls such as Aburi Salmon, Tamago Special and Crispy Roll
8. But the selections of donburi are very good!

Well, I tried a couple of dishes here during the grand opening (50% discount until 19 March 2015!).

I will just briefly inform you about the good ones.

Kyo Sushi Kelapa Gading

Kyo Sushi

# Tamago Special (IDR 13,182)
The simple good sushi roll consisting of crunchy bits inside the sushi roll, good tamago on top with extra mayo sprinkle and special sauce. Very good considering the VERY cheap price.

Kyo Sushi

# Inari Tenkasu
Another simple goodness. The good part of inari is always the tofu skin with sweet and pungent flavor. Same here. The seasoned rice inside was pretty good too as it was mixed with some carrots and kyuri to boost up the freshness.

Kyo Sushi

# Chicken Ramen – Spicy (IDR 30 k)
First time having this dish here, and by the look, it seemed very plain. But taste-wise, it’s not that bad. I think that they’re using miso soup based, and add the chili powder for a touch of spiciness. The seaweed flavor was strong and the chicken was tender. It wasn’t bad at all.

Kyo Sushi - Katsudon

Kyo Sushi

# Katsudon set (IDR 29,091 ala carte / IDR 42,727 set menu) – Oyakodon (IDR 28,182 ala carte / IDR 41,818 set menu)
The best dish of all. I gotta admit that they’re very good in making a delicious donburi. The simple rice dish was topped with a very crunchy breaded chicken fillet and half done scrambled egg. Very normal donburi, but with very good taste. Thanks to the good seasoning skill I guess. I have (and will) always come back for more of this. The Oyakodon is always good too!

# Crispy Roll (IDR 18,182)
Consisting of fried salmon skin, crunchy bits, kyuri, tobiko and spicy mayo, this roll is actually an upgraded version of the Tamago Special. Somehow I just love their crunchy bits which is very nice inside the mouth.

# Aburi Salmon (IDR 33,636)
This sushi roll can be considered as their best ace card. It again is consisted of crunchy bits, kani, mayo, special sauce and the most important part is, the extra kick from the half-baked salmon. Love it!

Other sushi rolls? Well, not so good. I tend to skip it (except for the special tamago roll and inari sushi).

Kyo Sushi

Anyway, to sum up, I personally find this place one of my simple favourites. It’s suitable for daily lunch or dinner due to its reasonable price approach. But of course, we are not going to love a place with only reasonable price as the good side right? Taste is always critical and it seems that for me, Kyo Sushi did a pretty good job so far with the rice dishes.

Will I recommend this place to you? Yes, but with a note that you have to know what to order here.

Three of my most fav rice dishes by Kyo Sushi are Katsu Don, Oyako Don and Chicken Omurice.
