Spoiler alert! Did you know Gran Mahakam Hotel in the South of Jakarta has amazing Japanese Restaurant called Aoki? I DIDN’T! Yes, verdict comes first in this post and it was pretty mind-blowing!
At the end of 2018, I was there to try out their food and man, it was surprisingly good. Aoki itself has intimate vibes. It isn’t that big, dimly-lit and it felt very private when stepping into the dining area. I did think that it was the right place for a romantic dinner with a partner.
But what had me at hello was totally the food that they served.
Aoki Japanese Cuisine is a Restaurant specialized in Japanese Cuisine. Obviously, duh! What set them apart is that they’re truly good at this. Some of the highlights are Shabu Shabu, Sukiyaki, Bento, Sashimi, Sushi and Jyu Box! And what I personally liked from them were, all the food that I had. Yes, all! Because everything was so good!
Let’s talk about their Sukiyaki.
It might look simple here and believe me when I said I had the same thought at first. But the smell of the simmering sukiyaki was so good, I could taste the sweetness of the rich broth. The vegetables added depth of flavors and the shirayaki noodle was really a nice touch that served texture! But the best part is of course the beautiful thinly-sliced beef! It was so tender and it went super well with the sukiyaki!
Grilled Kobe Beef! Needless to say, it was the juiciest, the most tender beef we had! It literally melted in my mouth. It did melt!

Well, back to the topic! The next best thing (if not equally awesome) was the Truffle Gyu Don! Everyone agreed that it was so good because of the tenderness of the Gyu ever! Drenched in truffle oil, we could taste the truffle goodness from miles away! It was really a super satisfying dish!
Coming next are the nigiri salmon sushi and the maguro sushi!
The salmon nigiri was so good mostly because of the thick salmon slice and the fragrant torched part that tasted so well with the overall nigiri sushi! And the tuna sushi was as fresh as it could be! No weak link here at AOKI. No weak link so far! Just mind-blown!
I think you should really give it a try and make sure you order at least some dishes that I had! I guarantee that you will mostly agree with me. For me, this place is pretty far away, since my house is in the far North and Aoki is in the South! But really, when I crave truly amazing Japanese food, I will surely come back for more!
