All-Indonesian-Cuisine at Bumbu Moyang.

Second post of the year!

I would love share about my recent experience dining at Bumbu Moyang, a modern Indonesian restaurant in the North of Jakarta!

Bumbu Moyang is not a newbie in the industry as it has been standing tall and tough for years in the famous area, Pantai Indah Kapuk, for its culinary circus. With many restaurants and café come and go, Bumbu Moyang remains.

The strengths of Bumbu Moyang is always its straight-forward Indonesian dishes along with its extensive selection. The extensive selection is in literal meaning, as you can actually hold the thick menu book. The various choices are really mouth-watering and seem to be really inviting. Price-wise, they are really reasonable ranging from IDR 17.5 k to IDR 90 k.

Interior-wise, the place is truly Indonesian. It has plenty of instagrammable spots too such as the area near the restroom, which has a cozy seat with vintage setting. A lot of guests seemed to take a picture of that certain spot during my visit. There are also indoor and outdoor areas, with indoor area being a bit dim-lit, and the outdoor area with plenty of sun light.

Oh, I love the outdoor area since it was most-instagrammable. Check out the pictures.

I ordered Lychee Mint, and it really looooks so good it almost resembles a Christmas tree! Tasted really refreshing too, perfect for a hot weather!

Let’s check out the food!

# Perkedel Tempe

This unique appetizer is a signature here in Bumbu Moyang. Perkedel normally uses potatoes, but Bumbu Moyang makes a twist and replaces the main star to tempeh! The tempeh is mashed and fried with crunchy batter, and it’s served with sour and spicy chili sauce. Pretty unique, right?

# Bakwan Jagung

Who can say no to Bakwan Jagung (Corn Fritter)? The corn fritter here was pretty good. It had the usual ingredients and it tasted nice with its sweet corn.

# Gado Gado Taman Sari

My daily fav food, gado gado! Gado-gado is an Indonesian salad with assorted vegetables, corns, potatoes, and the main dressing, peanut sauce. The goodness of gado-gado is not an exception here, it served its purpose here. The peanut sauce was spot on to me and it complemented all the ingredients really well!

# Ayam Cabe Rawit

Oh my, remembering this dish has already excited me! By the name of it, it certainly screams HOTNESS! The chicken pieces were given generously and all covered in chilies and oil. It had this subtle garlicky flavor but with bold heat that made me said hu ha hu ha while putting some napkins to my sweating face. I truly recommend this to anybody that loveeee spicy challenging food.

# Rendang Merah Bumbu Moyang

Rendang is famous not only amongst Indonesian people, even tourists usually will find this certain food appealing. Its main highlight is its complex usage of ingredients and also a long process of creating the dish. The result is usually very spicy and tender beef chunks that go along with (preferably hot) steam rice and any other Indonesian food! The rendang merah here was also as good as expected! No complaint here.

# Sate Maranggi

Sate Maranggi is also a very popular amongst Indonesian people. The rich and bold flavor coming from the marination is usually the highlight of Sate Maranggi itself. In Bumbu Moyang, the sate maranggi was rich and bold in flavor indeed, but with a twist. It uses oncom (kinda like fermented soy) as an extra kick.

# Ayam Taliwang

Originally from Lombok, this Indonesian dish (Grilled Chicken) is definitely another winner dish by Bumbu Moyang. I’m a big fan of spicy food and this IS it! The spices used to marinate the chicken was spot on and so fragrant it made me crave for more. Some of my friends said it was so spicy they couldn’t handle it, but for me, it’s a challenge that thrilled me. Lav!

# Udang Rica Rica

Also one of the spiciest foods we had that day! The prawns were so fresh and spicy, it actually tasted like a real deal. The combination of hot chili and bouncy prawns was so good. The only thing it’s lacking is the portion, I want more!

# Bandeng Cabut Duri

I don’t usually like Bandeng, but heck, this Bandeng is real goody! The size of the Bandeng fish was huge and it was rich in flavor too. By this time, it dawns on me that Bumbu Moyang has a signature bold approach towards their dishes. For me that love rich flavor, I found it lovely for me! The sweet spicy touch was a real treat.

# Sop Iga Asam Pedas

Probably the best thing that day, next to the Ayam Cabe Rawit and Ayam Taliwang. I love ribs and this ribs is uniquely different. It was in the form of soup, with noticable spices and refreshing but subtle acidity that sparked a kind of addiction. If you know Garang Asem, this definitely tasted quite similar, but IMHO, better! You should definitely try this when visiting their outlet!

# Nasi Bakar

Nasi Bakar here was pretty flavorful even on its own. It had anchovies, lemongrass and basil along with other ingredients that enriched the whole wrap. The smoky burnt flavor was also a nice touch.

All in all, the experience of dining in Bumbu Moyang was an A. The Indonesian vibes along with lovely Indonesian dishes had me at the first visit.

For me, Indonesian cuisine is timeless and I grew up with it. I’m pretty sure that there are plenty of you who love Indonesian cuisine as much as me here. So, if you’re looking for an Indonesian restaurant to dine in with family or friends, look no more, here’s my recommendation, Bumbu Moyang.
