Newest Recommendation. Nikkei Experience at Fat Shogun.

A few weeks ago, I was invited by Fat Shogun to their food tasting event.
I honestly had no idea about the existence of this restaurant and eventually found out that Fat Shogun was actually a new-comer.

Located in a new building in Mega Kuningan, Fat Shogun was ready to serve food and unique cocktails.

Focusing themselves in Japanese-Peruvian or better known as Nikkei cuisine, Fat Shogun brings many unique delicacies to people in Jakarta. Most of them are neither new nor ground-breaking but everything is more like an upgrade or twisted version of the Japanese cuisine that we know. One of their best dishes is Black Cod Misoyaki (more about it later) and it was superb! Really? Yes!

Fun fact: Fat Shogun’s Chef, Dicky Riadi used to work with Nobu Restaurant in Miami for quite some time and his experience there brought him here to recreate one of the most recognisable dishes.

Interior-wise, Fat Shogun is the definition of chic and modern. The main dining area is spacious and beautiful marble tables are arranged neatly to spark an elegant impression. There is an impressive big Japanese wooden gate in the centre of the dining area and it certainly signifies its Japanese root visually in a great way.

The bar itself looks convincing. Well, I’m certainly not an alcohol fan, but there were plenty of cocktails that you should try. Oh, I tried their house-made sake and loved it to bits. The sweetness of the sake was really bold and somehow, it brought out more depth of flavours to the plain-looking liquid.

There are some private room too that guests can use. The outdoor looks lovely as well and there’s some seriously good view to look at. 😉

Let’s dig further for some of the food and drinks I tried.

# Shogun Roll (IDR 120 k)
Roll of prawn, cream cheese topped with mango slices and avocado.

One of my favourites for the visit. The combination of mango and avocado slices was spot on and it was really packed of flavours.

# Lazy Salmon Roll (IDR 125 k)
Deep fried classic roll, filled with baked salmon & cream cheese, topped with spicy fried salmon, garlic chips & green scallion.

Another good sushi roll that utilises combination textures, from the crispy deep fried outer layer to the soft delicious salmon.

# Tuna Over Crispy Rice (IDR 115 k)
Crispy rice topped with spicy tuna, scallion & fish eggs.

# Tuna Tataki (IDR 140 k)
Seared sashimi grade of tuna, thinly sliced, scallion & served with tataki yuzu sauce.

This tuna tatami is so pretty and it was good as well. The tatami yuzu sauce was the highlight of the dish, bringing a light citrusy aftertaste when dipped.

# Red Snapper Ceviche (IDR 80 k)
Traditional Peruvian raw seafood or fish. In this case, it’s red snapper which is cut into small pieces, cured & balanced with lime juice, onion, jalapeño pepper, served with cracker chips.

Ceviche has many versions but this one was pretty delightful. It felt like eating something like nachos when eaten with the chips. More chips please!

# Tuna Tostados (IDR 80 k)
Chopped of sashimi grade tuna with red pepper, cilantro, edamame beans over bed of fried tortilla & topped with spicy creamy sauce.

Just like a thin crusted pizza, this is actually a tortilla which is topped with thinly sliced tuna. I loved it so much.

# Salmon Tostados (IDR 85 k)
Chopped of sashimi grade salmon with red pepper, cilantro, edamame beans over bed of fried tortilla & topped with spicy creamy sauce.

A superior version if compared to the Tuna Tostados. Somehow, salmon just seems perfect for every dish, and on the tortilla, it created a soft-meet-crispy texture sensation that works super well. I remembered vividly that it had this exotic truffle oil flavour which made it even better.
# Crab Salad (IDR 80 k)
Lump crab over greens, sprinkled with salmon skin, then served with buttery sesame dressing.

There are very rare salad dishes which are as good as this Crab Salad. The combination of crabby shreds and buttery sesame dressing was amazing and it really worked perfectly with the lil’ pieces of crispy salmon skin crackers.

# Miso de Mariscos (IDR 65 k)
Miso broth, shrimp, clam, fish, seaweed, scallion $ shredded snow pea, with optional fried onion.

Something soupy with bold umami is easily likable for me. This one was pretty good and hearty. Not the best of their dishes that day, but was decent.

# Salmon Tiradito (IDR 120 k)
Thinly slice sashimi grade of salmon with spicy red pepper tiradito sauce, topped with coriander leaves.

As described above, this is more or less a sashimi. The thing is, it is paired with red pepper tiradito sauce, which if eaten together, made it a more compelling dish.

# Black Cod Misoyaki (IDR 185 k)
36-hour marinated Canadian black cod, served with saute asparagus & horenzo.

This was hands-down the best for the day, which was already really packed with many great dishes. The buttery sweet-ish miso and soft fatty black cod were simply exceptional. I tasted only a few Black Cod dishes in my whole life and they were all awesome. The black cod here was equally delectable, if not more than the others.

# Mango Mousse with Coconut Sorbet (IDR 55 k)
Mango mousse, mixed fruits, almond touille & coconut sorbet.

This is a tropical dessert that will guarantee a smile on your face. I loved their mango mousse, which had this intense mango flavour without tasting too sour. The Coconut Sorbet made it even better, adding more sweetness to the already delightful mango mousse.

# Milk Chocolate Pannacotta (IDR 55 k)
Milk chocolate, mixed berries, vanilla ice cream.

I guess it’s hard to say anything bad about chocolate, unless it’s expired or mixed with weird stuff. But well, this was a gorgeous one. The plating was super tempting and pretty. It tasted great too and I’m sure this is a very likable dessert for Fat Shogun’s patrons.

# Latte (by Morph Coffee)

Overall Fat Shogun is a really recommended place for you to enjoy a different kind of experience, much especially if you are a Japanese cuisine fan because this Nikkei experience will even expand your sense of appreciation towards this rarely-explored direction in Jakarta.

Food recommendation for Japanese-Peruvian first-timer: Shogun Roll, Salmon Tostados, Crab Salad, Black Cod Misoyaki, Mango Mousse and Milk Chocolate Pannacotta.

Drink recommendation: Coffee, Datelines and Shogun Sake.
