Modern Sushi with a Twist. Kenji Sushi.

Sushi is a favourite food of mine and I am certainly a hardcore lover of this particular Japanese cuisine. In Kelapa Gading, there are a few reputable Japanese restaurants as you might have known it, but have you visited Kenji Sushi. Or let me put it this way, have you heard about Kenji Sushi?

I’m quite sure that even if you’re a resident in Kelapa Gading area, some of you might have never seen Kenji Sushi, let alone visit it. I’ve actually encountered a couple of people (who live in Kelapa Gading) who asked me for a recommendation on where to enjoy sushi, then I told them this place. Apparently, they were pretty clueless about it, despite their serious culinary curiosity. But I won’t blame them because, really, Kenji Sushi is located at a tricky position where not many people actually pass the road. Even if you happen to pass the road a few times, it might be quite difficult to notice this little sushi house due to its size. From the outside, Kenji Sushi looks pretty dull with beige-ish colour. They might have to work on this issue. But from the inside, their interior is a minimalist beauty! Everything is simple but very Japanese. A cozy little place I might say. 😉

So, with this understanding, let me review this fav place of mine here.

Kenji Sushi has been opened for quite a few years now. Kenji Sushi is a restaurant focusing on modern Japanese cuisine and most of the food selections have some surprising twist every here and there. For example, you will be able to taste a sushi roll with mango sauce, a pizza version of sushi, and even salmon salsa. They also have several sauces to show off, from the exotic mango sauce to twisted balsamic sauce. So, the team behind Kenji Sushi is simply a group of passionate people, thrive to redefine the sushi creation with some added bonus. Well, it’s a vision that I see fit in this ever-changing culinary world.

I was visiting this place just last week, and I was thrilled to see their improvement. After all, it’s been quite some time since my last visit. I just had no much time to revisit some of my favourite restaurants. I wish every saturday and sunday had some extra time (maybe 6 hours) for us to maximise all the fun we could get. 😉

Let’s see some of the stuff that I tried there.

# Salmon Tartare (IDR 64k)

Starting with a cold appetizer, here’s the salmon tartare. Consisted of fresh salmon cuts, avocado, black tobiko and tortilla chips, the salmon tartare was refreshing. It tasted good, fresh and the tortilla chips addition made it very fun to it. I loved the sweet sauce and mayo which made the whole dish even better.

# Hulk Roll (IDR 58k/roll)

Consisted of 8 slices of sushi roll with spicy salmon, crunch and japanese mayo, this greenie was an underrated choice. I think it looked pretty ordinary, but taste-wise, it was great. Basically, it is simple sushi roll, the highlight is definitely the chuka wakame which adds up more complexity with its texture and taste. The wakame was a good match for this whole sushi.

# Mambo Mango (IDR 48k/half roll | IDR 78k/roll)

Ever since I visited this place the first time, this sushi roll has become my favourite sushi here. How is it not? It has these wonderful ingredients such as shrimp, lobster salad, black tobacco and mamenori, plus the sexiest mango sauce ever! At first, I thought mango sauce wouldn’t work, but gosh, I was so wrong! The mango sauce was the best part of the whole sushi, blending in this sweet exotic flavour into my mouth along with the fresh lobster salad and shrimp. Say yum! <3

# Salmon California Don (IDR 56k)

Besides sushi, Kenji Sushi has quite a lot of delicious donburi for patrons to enjoy. And heaven, their donburi is lovely as well. I tried this salmon california roll and loved every bit of it. The donburi had the best sushi rice ever, and topped with lettuce, crunchy tempura flakes and spicy salmon. Pour over a bit of soy sauce to taste, put some chili powder and if you like, you can throw in some wasabi on the mix and it’s all set! What a delicious donburi it was!

Kenji Sushi is truly a hidden gem in Kelapa Gading. Not many have known and it’s actually easy to find when you pay attention. The food was really good, as always. I understood that there are some improvement compared to the last visit (even though I am always satisfied in every visit) , as they are really committed to make amazing sushi for maximum satisfaction of the loyal customers.

If you have never visited this place, I suggest you do anytime soon!

Oh, Kenji Sushi is located across Bangi Kopitiam, or if you still have no idea about the location, it will be easier if you give Kenji Sushi a call first. 🙂
