Kelapa Gading is known as the area full of food, and yes, saying that means all types of food. One of the newest comers that offers a good experience of food venturing is OTW Food Street. It came out strong with seemingly unique and pretty solid concept. It introduces people to the classically known street food such as Indonesian fried rice, Japanese rice dishes, American burgers and traditional snacks and munchies, from martabak to cendol. With so many choices to pick, guests will be thrilled (or confused) in deciding what’s for lunch/dinner. I myself, found the various choices on a positive side. It’s pretty good when you gather up with friends for social meet up or simply hang out, in a good place and with reasonable price as the extra perks.
I have visited this venue a couple of times and finally decided to write a brief review about it. Afterall, it’s a new promising venue that I think, will stay strong in the culinary battlefield here.
Discussing about the location, I really thought that it was a great location, positioned at the corner of the busy crossroad at Jalan Kelapa Kopyor. I wondered why a few dining places in this corner (before OTW) had failed to succeed. When talking about the interior, it wittingly creates the casual atmosphere with old building interior, a smart way to project their concept of street food.
They also have the outdoor dining area, for people who enjoy non-air con area, perhaps to strengthen their food street vibe.
When digs further about food and service, they serve a pretty decent kind of food. From Japanese to Indonesian with reasonable price ranging from IDR 18 k – IDR 65 k (for “martabak” or you can picture it as Indonesian pancake in bigger size and softer and smoother texture, thanks to the use of much much butter).
The concept for ordering is that you can go the cashier and order your preferred dishes. Then you pay, get a number and sit nicely until your food is served and brought to your table. Simple right? Surprisingly, the serving time was pretty fast during my visits, even though when they were fully packed with starving patrons.
# Iced Thai Milk Tea (IDR 15 k) and Iced Taro Milk Tea
The thai tea was nothing special. In fact, it was lacking the thai tea factor most likely due to its mountain of ice. But the other day, I had a glass of Iced Taro Milk Tea and it was pretty good!
They also have this coffee drinks which were another okay.
# Cendol Original (IDR 15k)
Going traditional, we were tempted to have this sweet old-fashioned cendol. In case you do not know what cendol is, cendol is a traditional Indonesian drink with rice-flour jelly in green, coconut milk and melted palm sugar. It tends to be sweet and refreshing with the green jelly as the fun part in chewing session. The cendol here was pretty good with fair sweetness.
# Nasi Goreng Hijau (IDR 25k)
Don’t be fooled by the name or the colour, since honestly, it was nothing special at all. It was just a normal plain fried rice in green coloring (I don’t know where the colour was coming from) with dices of pale-looking chicken.
On the other hand, I tried the Gyutan Fried Rice on my previous visit, and it was pretty dang good. It also had more flavour and the beef helped a lot in making it tasty.
# Beef Black Burger (IDR 35 k) with extra Fried Egg (IDR 6 k)
As the icon of OTW, this burger did not disappoint at all. It actually looked boring as well (aside from the unusual dark colour), but when it came to taste testing, it succeeded pretty well. I definitely loved the juicy beef patty which had this bold flavour, extra kick from the bacon, egg and melting cheese. One little thing though, is that the dark-knight-suited burger failed quite badly. It was too dry and without any significant difference. I’d rather they use a normal-looking good soft bread than this striking-looking dry bread.
I also tried the Green Tea Martabak (IDR 65 k) here consisting of cheese and chocolate, and even though it was not amazing, it was pretty good actually!
I’ve also tried the Taro and Cheese Roti Panggang, but it wasn’t good.
My friends tried the Blackpepper and Teriyaki GyuTan Don, but it seemed that both were just okay for them.
All in all, I thought OTW comes off pretty strong as a new contender in Kelapa Gading area. Even though there are definitely rooms for improvement, I do have a positive impression towards the place. People (yes, I’m talking about me!) will complain this and that, but they will still come back for lunch, dinner, family time, social meet up and stuff. It’s a decent place after all.
Oh, the best thing is that it’s only a 5 minute-walk from my place! 😉
