In the month of holy Ramadhan, many restaurants participate in celebrating the glorious event by having a thematic menu. Shangri-La Hotel Jakarta does participate in presenting special offer, in which they include delicious Middle Eastern delights and Shisha Tent for patrons’ pleasure.
Middle Eastern cuisine has always been tied with this special month, and it is like bringing the atmosphere and middle eastern culture closer to our Muslim friends. Middle East is very well-known for its authentic taste and its unique approach in captivating the sense of taste. I was lucky to be invited and had the chance to taste the exotic cuisine at SATOO Garden, Shangri-La Jakarta.
For this thematic event alone, SATOO Garden, which is located closely by the pool, has been magically shazam(ed) and turned into a dimly-lit casual area where patrons can freely choose to sit relaxingly on the floor on the middle eastern rugs and casually enjoy their choice of Shisha. The inspiration for SATOO Garden comes from the Middle East itself, where they dominantly use red and yellow colours to draw out the magical vibe. Honestly, I am not really into the interior, but it certainly brings a different atmosphere and in this busy hectic town, we can really use a different atmosphere as a short escape. 🙂
Here are some of the Shisha Tent snack menu.
# Mezze Platter (IDR 120 k)
This Mezze Platter is consisted of hummus, tabouleh, mutabbal, labneh and Pita bread. I have to honestly say that I rarely encountered this kind of delicacies and not really sure whether I was going to like it or not. But like Cinderella’s mom said, “Have Courage. Be Kind”, so I took the words seriously and put an open mind, then indulged myself in the apparently, sensational delights.
Of course, not every thing on the plates was good, since I really found no clue about what to taste when it came to the tabouleh. But other than that, the other main three dishes were lovely. I especially loved the labneh, which is a some sort of greek yogurt, since it had that strangely good addictive feature that left my sense of taste ‘curious’ and wanting for more.
Oh, I forgot to tell you how to enjoy this. Just grab the pita bread, and stuff one of your favourite dishes in it and dig in. Well, if you like, you can just stuff everything in the Pita bread and dig in anyway. 😀
# Kebab Halabi Wraps (IDR 175 k)
To put it boldly, this was one of the most stunning dishes of the night alongside the Shish Taouk. Appearance-wise, this dish looked a bit like a pillow, which is not a sign of good food. But I must say that I was well-deceived and the camouflage turned to be an unexpected surprise. The lamb inside was certainly the secret weapon, smartly blended in with the onion salad and garlic yogurt dipping to bring out the best of the flavours. I did love this very much.
# Shish Taouk (IDR 160 k)
Another delicious dish with unfamiliar look. In Indonesia, we know it as “Sate”. The name in Middle East is more fancy, right? Served alongside with hummus dipping and pita bread, the chicken skewers was lovely. Since it was grilled, the smoky flavour really shone and simply enriched the well-seasoned chicken chunks. But I did not find the pita bread useful in the dish. I simply took the skewer, dipped it lightly in the hummus dipping and enjoy!
# Indian Samosa (IDR 120 k)
Like any other Samosa, this one is made of fried pastry with savoury filling. This Samosa uses rich ingredients with significant earthy flavour. It is served with mint and mango chutney. Since I am not a big fan of any kind of Samosa, I did not find this particularly interesting.
# Pistachio Baklava a la Jakarta (IDR 100 k)
As famous as Samosa, this Baklava turned out to be an upgraded version of the usual Baklava. The baklava here uses Pistachio as the main star, and it turned out to be a great decision. I am a fan of Pistachio and I loved how they cleverly translated the pistachio into this sweet delicacy. They did use the sweet honey that came in contrast with the pistachio and pastry layers. With both the sweet and savoury elements nicely combined, I simply loved this Baklava.
They do also have Indonesian snacks. They looked tempting and might be perfect as an opener for the breakfasting dinner. <3
Personally, I do think people can really come to SATOO Garden and indulge themselves in a relaxing vibe and casually enjoy the rare gorgeous delights. I myself, have no experience in the Shisha world, so I did not try it as well that night. However, my friends seemed to really have fun with it that night, and I can see why. 🙂
SHISHA MENU (IDR 100 k per flavour)
